Description: The Spektral Quartet writes: “We’re bringing the drama to Hyde Park on March 10th with Elliott Carter’s seminal String Quartet No. 2. With each of the four string parts written as a distinct, at times even adversarial character, the composer’s notoriously challenging score earned him a Pulitzer Prize in 1960. To help guide both new and seasoned listeners in the experience of this uncompromisingly animated work, Spektral will offer its own imaginative take on these roles through theatrical character descriptions and a plot synopsis from the stage.

Chicago composer Chris Fisher-Lochhead’s “Dig Absolutely” (named after a particularly humorous and genial exchange between Leonard Bernstein and members of the Black Panther organization) has become a staple of Spektral’s repertoire, with its engaging polarity of compositional exactitude and aural fluidity, and the Quartet is thrilled to be performing the piece for the first time in Hyde Park. Mozart’s Quartet in D major, K. 575 kicks off the proceedings with one of the composer’s sunniest examples of his chamber music oeuvre, ironically written during perhaps the most bleak, sickly and destitute periods of his short life.”
